The residential Junior Fellows practice these ideals of international and intercultural engagement in their intellectual pursuits as well as their daily lives at the College. SJC strives to embody the spirit of the original motto of St. John’s University of Shanghai, the pursuit of a better world through “Light and Truth.”

Chinese Canadian Stories – A UBC-SFU Project

Chinese Canadian StoriesFor more than 200 years, migrants of Chinese heritage have traveled to Canada to live, to work, and to raise their families. They have come at different times and from different places in China and throughout the world. Many have called a variety of places home before coming to Canada, but once here, they formed vibrant communities that have significantly shaped Canadian society. “Chinese Canadian Stories” is a path-breaking project gathering the work of universities and community groups from across Canada. Our vision is to give Canadians–young and old–the tools to discover and make their own history, using the latest advances in digital technology to access, recover, and record our neglected past. Wong Gong Gam Genealogy Project

Wong Gong Gam Genealogy ProjectOur journey into documenting the life and times of our Grandfather, Wong Gong Gam, began on a whim.  The Asian Library at the University of British Columbia was seeking contributions from Chinese pioneer families for their Historical Chinese Language Materials website.  We knew that our Dad, Glen Wong, had in his possession a box of dusty old documents and photos but we had no idea what treasures lay in that box.  What began as a whim became a passion when,  with the help of the Asian Library and UBC Archives/Special Collections Division, we slowly pieced together our Grandfather’s legacy.  Wong Gong Gam, pioneer, merchant and philanthropist, from his arrival in Vancouver in 1901 to his death in 1938, was deeply ensconced in the social fabric of Vancouver’s Chinatown and became known as its unofficial mayor.  We are excited to share with you our genealogy project which uncovers a part of Vancouver’s history that is largely forgotten.
